Hiking and Adventure in the grand staircase

Near Cannonville

The Northwest corner of the monument is home to expansive views and deep slot canyons.  The area’s history includes a rich western pioneer heritage and remnants of the ancient Anasazi.  The northwest corner is home to the most remote and stark areas in all of southern Utah.  The Kaiparowits plateau is an area between the Cottonwood road and the Hole in the rock road.  In Paiute it means “Big mountains little brother”.

One of our hikes in to the Northwest corner is a  hike into the badland hills called “The blues”.  This area is great for photographs and great for contrasting shadow and light.  Another hike that we offer into the area is called Round Valley Draw.  RVD is a deep slot canyon that is rarely visited.  It is often overshadowed by its more easily accessable brothers Willis Creek Gorge and Bull Valley Gorge, yet offers a slighty more technical nature.  A venture into Round Valley Draw is always an adventure and it is my favorite hike in the area.

Other hikes in the area:

  • The Blues
  • Round Valley Draw
  • Willis Creek
  • Bull Valley Gorge
  • The Collet slot
