An easy rappel into the Huntress Slot

Sometimes the best place to hide an area is right next to the highway. Although this canyon is very accessible from a vehicle, it is virtually unknown. Thousands of cars pass by this sculptured masterpiece on their way to better known venues. This canyon is one of our Adventure routes.  Understand that there are some mild drops into the canyon, this means we will lower you down with ropes in a couple of spots.  This place is not for the faint of heart, although I have taken families down it with older mature children.  It holds a number of rappels and downclimbs. Sections of open red rock canyon with hoodoo formations, pot holes virtually always full of ice-cold, stagnant water followed by fluted narrows with surprising twists and turns. The bottom section of the canyon is an easy stroll through shale deposits rich with fossils. After a couple of miles, the canyon ends at a man-made cave hollowed through the Navajo sandstone that goes right under the highway. This is a full day, technical canyon that has a little bit of everything.

  • Down climbing into fluted narrow hallways
  • Some guided rappels (we lower you down)
  • Moderate hiking
  • 5-7 hours
